Windows Server 2008 R2 Service Pack 1 – SvcInstall.exe silently fails when running as a service

I have a Windows service build in C# that calls out to a MSSQL database and runs a nightly scheduled task. It worked fine until Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 and was subsequently updated to Windows Server 2012 RC1.
I have the service checked as a recommended update and installed successfully. At that point, the service would fail to start with the following error in the event log.

The event viewer shows that the service installed without error, but a manual start results in the same errors.
I’ve taken a look at MS documentation, and found a great amount of information on the changes made by SP1, such as service priorities, start priority, startup type, account privileges, etc. My service does not use any of these options, but I wanted to make sure it was playing fair with the OS before releasing my service.
Any other thoughts as to why the service would not start are welcome, and any further details would be appreciated.
