DENVER — A bit of good news for people on the road who have been enduring the snow and ice storms sweeping the U.S. Midwest and Northeastern U.S.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) published a statement Saturday saying the amount of snow currently in the United States is likely to be “at the lower end of normal for this time of year.”

NOAA added that “there is high confidence that the snow and ice will end this winter.”

The statement said that “snow is currently forecast to fall at a near-average rate of 2 inches per hour from the western Great Lakes region to the Gulf Coast, where a moderate amount of snow will continue for a second or two. This is at the lower end of the historical range of near-average snowfall rates this time of year.”

It continued, “even so, there is high confidence that the current episode will end by early to mid-April, with snowfall rates projected at only a few inches per hour around the nation’s midsection. The East Coast is the only region that will experience precipitation rates above its historical averages.”

The statement concluded by noting that “by April 20, snow and ice on the East Coast is likely to be nearly gone.”

Now that is some good news!

Difference between the following two sentences?

I am not a native speaker, and I am having trouble understanding the difference between the two sentences below.

I found the word “book” useful.
I found a book (or books) useful.

The first sentence means that “I found” was used, but the second sentence is a little difficult for me.
I know that you can say “a book useful”, where you are using the singular form of “useful”, but I cannot understand why you would use “book” instead of the more generic “a book” in the second sentence. Can someone please explain?
