As always, I have had much help with local and family contacts in obtaining photographs and information. Meeting in person was at the festival of San Miguel de Allende in 1999 with Baltazar Delgado and Harold Bender, modernists, and in 2000 with Baltazar Delgado and the poet Robert Duncan. In 2000, the late Professor Simon Hanson, the late Prof. Jeffrey Gibson, and Eva Hardenfager, a daughter of the late Prof. C. D. Hardenfager, provided their intimate knowledge of early works of Otom literature. The late Dr. David Widmer, of the John Glenn Memorial Heritage Foundation, and Alphonse Lee, of National University, assisted me with the letter on the Basque and French Missionaries, a subject not closely related to this volume in the publications of the Bancroft Union. Dr. John A. Widmer, of New Ulm, Minnesota, as always was most helpful in ways not always apparent.

One of my American colleagues, Dr. Hubert E. Keller Jr., University of Kentucky, generously sent me additional materials on Otom and Kohona (see his paper on “Otom Language Periodization” in the Bancroft News). Without this information, I would not have been able to reconstruct the history of Otom at the level of history which this volume requires.

Like previous editions, the final products were kindly edited by Ramon G¨¢mez Tort, of the Sociedad Mexicana de Anthropolog, with advice from H. Garcia, of the Instituto Nacional de Antropolog, and our clerical staff.
