India is a huge melting pot of different cultures, languages and lifestyles. So, what’s the harm in a creative person like a filmmaker trying to represent this diversity through his film? Nothing really, except that he should try and infuse something original into it. And that sums up what Pagal Premi is all about. It is a massive melting pot of different scenes drawn from different Bollywood hits. But when someone chooses to take a bit from this film, a scene from that and a character from a third film, all copied faithfully from the original with qualitative dilution or decay or degeneration, what would you call it? The film has been directed by Hara Pattanaik of Orissa.

The story has been divided into four parts. The first part “Aahatich” is based on the life of legendary singer (and legend) singer late Sharadindu Bandhyopadhyay. There is Sharadindu’s mistress, his newly wedded wife, his son, his fans, his idol, his friends, his enemies, his own music and all the other stuff that any life entwines into any of us. In their first meeting, Sharadindu falls in love with Viruma. Unfortunately, there are many obstacles in their way to the delight of the audience. The second part “Ajhena” is about what happens when the original version is eclipsed and the new one rises to the top of the chart. It is about the love story of the protagonists. The third part “M.R.Jayi” is Sharadindu Bandhyopadhyay’s (!) swan song. The lyrics are penned by Ravaprakash Sahu while the music is by the one and only Raghunath. It may not be a complete new story but it is about the death of Sharadindu’s son and his posthumous marriage to Viruma. And the final one, “Ajayda”, is about Sharadindu’s last piece of work in Shantiniketan, especially his music (which of course is his novel)-“Joytish”, which has been specially written for playback singer Jitendra Abhisheki.
