The girls then set out on a quest to find their mother, who is in hiding after being kidnapped by the Duchess because she is one of the best dancers at Emperor Robert’s court. Along the way, the princesses encounter a series of obstacles. The story’s stock villain, Dragon Nut, assigns the princesses a series of tasks that are sure to attract him and his cohorts and keep the fairy-tale characters trapped. Starring Darin Murray as Henry, 13, Tiffany Cappello as Malinda, 13, Clea DuVall as Mabel, 13, and Olivia Hack as Thea, 13, the flick’s cast of singing, dancing, and acting young actors (pre-singing and acting young actors?) also includes Nicole Anderson, 12, Kristen Budlow and Jade Budlow, 12, Annie Dutton, 11, Shona Howell, 11, and another child named Sophie, who can’t be found on the credits screen at the time this review goes to print.

writer-director Paul C. Telfer’s screenplay has the princesses singing and dancing to hits such as “The Lion Sleeps Tonight” (by The Tokens), “Tomorrow” (by The Beatles), “You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feeling” (by The Righteous Brothers), and “Put On Your Party Pants” (by Benny Andersson and Bjorn Ulvaeus). The eleven songs appear on the girls’ CDs, which also include lyrics. The songs are blandly presented, as if the musicals’ practitioners weren’t sufficiently talented to write original songs. The CGI animation use is limited, though toward the end the princesses zoom about in a single-plane composition, possibly because of a computer run-out of color bitmaps.

Palatino Lensing collaborated with Larry Jordan on the film’s cinematography. He worked with the Hiway Pix Creative Team on the CGI animation. The producers refuse to comment on the film because their agreement with Mattel, to promote the movie and issue a pair of dolls (Barbie’s Fashion Designer and Princess with Hair Accessories), prohibits any public relations.
