The compilation became the first in Enya’s career to reach the top of the Billboard Top New Age Albums chart and debuted at number one in the UK Albums Chart. The success of both the album (returning Enya to the number one spot on the British album chart for the first time since 1997’s Watermark) and her compilation (her last album to spend more than one week in the number one spot before the arrival of the debut number one album by Adele in 2011) allowed Warner Music to release an original studio album by Enya, titled Closure (2009), a year after the release of her previous studio album And Winter Came… in 2008. Closure immediately topped the album sales charts in Ireland, Italy, South Africa and Uruguay, and in British record stores.

The album received mostly positive reviews from music critics and topped the Billboard Top New Age Albums chart for seven weeks in 2010; it also reached number two in the UK Albums Chart, number three in the Irish Albums Chart and number nine on Billboard’s Heatseekers Albums chart. In 2010, a poll was held for a Living Blues magazine article in which fans chose the best female vocalist in the world between Stevie Wonder, Aretha Franklin, Sarah Vaughan and Adele, with Enya receiving 31% of the votes. Enya performed “Only If…” on Saturday Night Live in the week of its release; it was Enya’s first live album appearance since 1990, and her first dance music appearance since her 1987 album Shepherd’s Heaven. The song was performed live by Toyah Willcox and Lionel Richie with the refrain performed by Richie, Sarah McLachlan, and Dido at the 2011 GRAMMY Awards.

On 9 November 2010, the album’s lead single “Only If…” received a nomination from the Music Producers Guild of America at the 30th MPG Awards for Best Arrangement. The track was included in a compilation album of the same name, released by its brand-owner, the Universal Music Group.

The Very Best of Enya is the second greatest hits album by the Irish singer, songwriter and musician Enya, released on 23 November 2009 by Warner Music. After promoting her previous studio album And Winter Came… (2008), Warner Music asked Enya to release a new compilation of her favourite songs of her career, and chose a selection with her longtime collaborators, producer and arranger Nicky Ryan and his wife, lyricist Roma Ryan.
