The new Lightroom Comments panel provides a series of different Quick Look reviews, allowing a reviewer to better emphasize a particular feature by providing a stylized pen stroke for that point, as if individual reviewers were making annotations in Photoshop. This feature is only available in Photoshop, and I doubt I am going to use it much since I tend to do almost all my work in PhotoFlow.

I can’t tell you how much this new feature has improved my workflow. Before, I would never just sit down and design an image and leave it alone for anywhere from a few days to a few weeks. Every time I worked on a fresh set of image, I would already have a draft of the next set lined up in my mind and a lot of the concepts/color blocks worked out. Last time I used the new Comments panel, I literally just started working on the images once I finished designing them and took a nice, well-exposed, negative film shot. I then spent a few days perfecting the images in Photoshop. I could then make my feedback on the images and, even though they were unfinished, could send them off. I could then go back to work on designing the next set of images. I no longer need to plan ahead. The images are now moving pretty fast. Innovation, innovation.

Version 5 changes the default rotation of new layers by 90°, so if you’re in 90° or 270°, it won’t rotate your selection until you click the rotate icon on the right side of the toolbar. (And even then, it can’t rotate a few things like ellipses and pencils, so if you select an ellipse without seeing a rotate icon, you have to hold down the Ctrl/Command key when you press the rotate key.) So once you see the rotate icon, you can rotate objects by 90°, 180° or 270° without having to click three times. This is great. I can’t think of a single rotation movement that is that difficult. The rotation is smooth and fluid, and the buttons are perfectly sized and spaced.
