I recently reviewed the Photoshop for people who aren’t graphic designers and can’t imagine mastering Adobe’s program, but who like the idea of a free photo-editing app. What constitutes a photo-editing app? When I say “free” I mean free-to-use apps and free-to-download apps, things that require a paid subscription. This means that where I say “free,” I really mean “you get to keep it” — even if it’s a trial version.

The simplicity of Photoshop is one of its most powerful features. It wouldn’t take long to get the hang of it even if you don’t have any design experience. Though it’s aimed at “noobs” it has enough power, features, and tools to keep most amateurs busy for at least a few month’s. And it costs nothing.

Photoshop comes with a dozen or so default filters and effects, a powerful but simple photo-removal tool, the ability to make collages and digital scrapbooking, a swipe feature for browsing images on your iPad, smart-crop tool for automatically making crops or panoramas of your images, an excellent photo-retouching app for professionals and beginners alike.

You can also do much more than just edit images. You can rotate, trim and crop, create collages, color pick, adjust shadows and highlights, and adjust local contrast and brightness. They don’t give you all you need but at a very low price. Other image editing tools like Krita have much more functionality (for authors like me) but after seeing this tool I could only conclude that it is worth paying a tiny bit more for more functionality and fewer limitations.

Adobe’s newest app, Adobe Creative Cloud: Photography, is quite possibly the most powerful photography app you’ll ever use. Since this is the only app suite that the app is included in, it has all the features in the rest of the suite and a powerful array of new tools…especially when it comes to photo editing.

You create your artwork using the tools on the left. There are shapes, greyscale, colors, and color balance tools available. Once you’re done, you can save and share your art by exporting it to a device. The only time you need to save is when you create a new file (not the main art board).
You can move, resize, rotate, distort, and create a large array of creative shapes to use in your work. And there’s even a tool for painting on your photos! It’s the sort of overlooked tool that makes Photoshop a powerhouse.
