The first step to using Adobe Photoshop is to download the application. Adobe Photoshop is available for download for a number of operating systems, including Windows, Mac, and Linux. I got an early copy of CS6 and I’m not impressed. The new UI is pretty clunky. The toolbox is small and the UI is cluttered. The brushes tool is better, but a lot of the other tools are worse or are just missing. The user interface will change a lot between CS6 and CS7, I believe. Previous versions were fine, but you get what you pay for in the evaluation. I’m pretty sure you’ll just upgrade to a full version.

Hopefully the preview is just saying what the Photoshop product itself will be! (As a side note, however you can preview RAW images in the browser and save them to your hard drive. You can also save them to Creative Cloud for sharing/printing purposes.)

I like my PS while I’m editing – it’s a big machine, and my workflow is to use it for as much as possible, usually simultaneously with a crop, 1st and 2nd edit. I also do logistics and my own creations, and for both of these (e.g. special events, unusual sites) Lightroom is terrific. The initial statement of this review was to gather impressions of the newest version, so consider this a bonus in kind.

Of all the software (except for all the recent iOS updates) on my machine, this is the one I rely on the most. As Adobe product groups, I’m lucky enough to have daily access to the Photoshop team via video calls or frequent updates. I’ve never experienced any serious problems with updates, and I’ve never been able to get a stable update to Photoshop Creative Cloud from Adobe’s own servers to an earlier version. The latest CC update added support for the new iOS 12 (which was surely a factor in Adobe’s decision to create a Photoshop Sketch). I’ve noticed no performance issues with the update whatsoever.

There are others like Adobe Photoshop Lightroom, Adobe Photoshop Lightbox, GIMP, and many more.
